Corn Syrup Production

Application Problem:

A corn syrup manufacturer was looking for a reliable, low maintenance level transmitter, to measure carbon granular in a carbon column. Other technologies, including the electromechanical yo-yo system had been tried, without success. The client wanted a low maintenance solution.

Solution:

The ORCA Sonar low frequency interface transmitter, with automatic sludge cleaning was installed, which improved automation control and reduced maintenance downtime. The low frequency sonar, was able to measure the carbon granular interface very accurately through dirty, sticky black water and produced a reliable and repeatable level signal.

It is important to measure the carbon level because:

  1. The carbon is used for filtration of the raw corn syrup to filter out all the impurities. After the carbon has been spent, it is then mixed and cleaned with water forming a slurry which is pumped into carbon columns.
  2. It is important to measure the carbon level in the columns because as it reaches a certain height, it is then separated from the water and conveyed back to the furnace to be recarbonized and used again.
